The hamlet of Dunbeath originates from the 1800s. Built to cash in on the herring boom there were up to 100 boats operating from the harbour. The hamlet is a lot quieter now and provides an excellent viewpoint for Dunbeath Castle. To the north of Dunbeath lies the Laidhay Croft Museum and the Clan Gunn Museum and Heritage Centre.
