Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens has stunning parkland walks, colourful Edwardian borders, a Victorian walled garden, a pretty labyrinth and some great family trails. While the house here is renowned for its amazing portrait collection which has been curated in conjunction with the National Portrait Gallery, the gardens deserve a few words of their own too. The formal garden was laid out in 1716 but later replaced with grand undulating lawns and specimen trees. There’s been some major replanting going on a little more recently too and two privy gardens and an area of wilderness are now reaping the benefits. When the season is right, a walk through the walled garden and main border mean sweeping past some 5,000 lavender plants plus an abundance of flowers, fruit and vegetables.
