Groombridge Place Gardens in Tunbridge Wells pulls off that rare feat of having stunning horticultural displays for adults to admire while simultaneously having a whole load of features to entertain the kids. Stroll around the Knot Garden - tulip heaven (with a two colour scheme in summer) with a giant chess board, take a wander along Apostle Walk lined with 12 Drum Yews or head to the Secret Garden, where the waters of the stream feed the moat, home of vibrant pink cherry tree blossoms, azaleas and late flowering snowdrop candelabra primulas. The white rose garden is a study in the shades of white and features more than 20 types of white rose plus white-flowering foxtail lilies, primulas, tulips, peonies, poppies, hyacinths and lavender. Don’t miss the Peacock Walk and the rich herbaceous borders planted with clematis and traditional English perennials. Meanwhile, kids should be let loose in the nearby Enchanted Forest designed by TV gardener Ivan Hicks. In Crusoe’s World, two treehouses linked together with rope bridges shelteted under sail roofs are a hit with little ones as is the look out post high above the tree houses with views over the canal and steam trains of the Spa Valley.
