Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway

Summer Lane, Exbury, Southampton, Hampshire, SO45 1AZ

The Gardens are a spectacular 200 acre site, world-famous for the Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and rare trees and shrubs. This earthly paradise offers a riot of colour in spring, an oasis of tranquility in summer followed by a splendid show as the leaves change in the autumn. Discover Exbury’s hidden beauty and escape the cares of the world as you explore a myriad of pathways. Let the train take the strain on a 20 minute journey or ride a chauffeur driven buggy to tour the Gardens.

Outdoor Adventure Play Area, brand new for 2014, is a must-stop destination for younger visitors, with a basket swing, climbing apparatus and a slide, with easy access to the toilet facilities, and only a stone’s throw away from the Tea Rooms. Summer is a favourite time for families.

Mr Eddy’s Tearooms, Art Gallery and Gift Shop share the same visiting hours as the Gardens.

The Steam Railway runs every day the Gardens are open, with trains departing Exbury Central Station throughout the day. (See website for timetable) Exbury Gardens were awarded 'Best Garden Winner' in the Hudson's Heritage Awards of 2011 and Gardeners World voted Exbury as one of the top places in the country to see Camellias being awarded 'Camellia Garden of Excellence' 2014.

Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway is part of the following Travel Ideas:

Fifteen of the Best Spring Gardens by Veronica Peerless

"A visitor once described Exbury as ‘heaven with the gates open’, and I’d wager they visited in spring. Swathes of yellow (primroses and daffodils) are swiftly followed by the lipstick shades of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. The gardens were created by plant collector Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, who created several new varieties of rhododendron and azalea."
