Overview

Uncover the Life and Times of Winston Churchill at Chartwell The family home and garden of Sir Winston Churchill, Chartwell in Westerham, Kent, is not only a must-see for history buffs and architectural lovers, but also for those who enjoy spacious, well-thought-out gardens. When you've viewed the image, books and mementos scattered around his home, step out and experience the hillside gardens that inspired Britain's wartime leader from 1924 to the end of his life. Sir Winston enjoyed the landscape and nature in which he lived, including the lakes he had created, the kitchen garden and the Marycot, a small house he had designed for his daughter Mary. The estate also includes a wide area of woodland with looped trails and natural play areas.

What style of garden is Chartwell?

Charleston's walled garden was designed by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant incorporating Roger Fry's designs. Together they turned vegetable plots and hen runs, which were important to the household during the First World War, into a classic painter's garden, combining Mediterranean styles with cottage gardening. Part of the garden's sense of luxury and surprise stems from the variety of sculptures it contains. Classical forms sit side by side with Quentin Bell's life-size works, mosaic floors and tiled pools.
