When the sun shines on Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, tucked away in East Devon at Budleigh Salterton, it’s a glorious place to be. Acres of lush green lawns, glorious fountains and a rainbow of flowers set the scene, the backdrop to the beautiful Grade I listed glasshouses full of plants and trees from across the continents. Bicton has been a horticulturalist’s delight for nigh on 300 years, the lush Otter Valley soil producing spectacular shows each season. The site is famous for its 1000 trees from 30 different species – many endangered around the globe. Wander through the specialised gardens including American, Italian, Mediterranean and Cacti or explore the ornate glasshouses. Kids will love the acres of parkland, indoor and outdoor play area and 18 inch gauge Bicton Railway that cruises the park.
