Overview

Ardmaddy Castle gardens, in a most spectacular setting, are shielded to the north by mature woodlands, carpeted with bluebells and daffodils and protected from the Atlantic winds by the elevated Castle. The Walled Garden is full of magnificent rhododendrons, some huge, an increasing collection of rare and unusual shrubs and plants, the 'Clock Garden' with its cutting flowers, fruit and vegetables grown with labour saving formality, all within dwarf box hedging. Beyond, a woodland walk, with its amazing hydrangea climbing to 60 feet, leads to the water gardens - in early summer a riot of candelabra primulas, irises, rodgersias and other damp loving plants and grasses. Lovely autumn colour. A garden for all seasons. Shrubs, herbaceous plants, vegetables and summer fruits in season for sale Toilet suitable for disabled. Six self-catering cottages, details can be found at www.ardmaddy.com

Reviews

Visited Ardmaddy Castle Garden this week on a rather dull and damp day, we discovered a beautiful walled garden full of magnificent flowers in bloom and a very well stocked large vegetable patch. There is also a lovely tranquil water garden and woodland walk. Our day was truly brightened and we will definitely visit again.

Arrival information & directions

Address: Oban, Argyll & Bute, ObanPA34 4QY, United Kingdom

Once you get to Oban, you need to take the A816 south toward Lochgilphead and Campbeltown. About eight miles out of town there is a right turn on to the B844 for Easdale, Seil and Luing. Follow this road for about 5 miles. The road then takes a sharp right over a little bridge, but the Ardmaddy road goes straight on – there is a yellow sign that says “Garden Open” – take this smaller road. After about a mile, the road takes a sharp right bend through the Estate gates. Keep following the road down the hill – at the bottom of the hill there is a right turn towards the Castle. Take this and then follow the road round the base of the castle until you come to the car park.
