Overview

Stone Lane Gardens is a lovely woodland and water garden, with National Collections of birch and alder trees. In the summer months, the garden hosts a prestigious Annual Sculpture Exhibition, showing imaginative artwork in a wide variety of media. The garden is open 7 days a week, all year round.

Where is Stone Lane Gardens & Annual Summer Sculpture Exhibition located?

The garden is about 2 miles outside the pretty Dartmoor stannery town of Chagford, in the north east corner of Dartmoor National Park. It is just east of the A382 from Moretonehampstead to Whiddon Down.

What style of garden is Stone Lane Gardens & Annual Summer Sculpture Exhibition?

Stone Lane Gardens is a 5 acre woodland and water garden, set on a sloping, south facing hill on the edge of Dartmoor. The garden is an RHS Partner garden. The garden was created in the early 70s as a naturalistic garden by the late Kenneth Ashburner, a renowned garden designer and expert on birch trees. Massed planting of trees and more muted underplanting has created a sense of wildness and tranquility. The range of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants encourages wildlife into the garden.

What can guests enjoy at Stone Lane Gardens & Annual Summer Sculpture Exhibition?

The garden is a very special and peaceful place, and a very contemplative environment. However, it is also a great place to bring your family. Children love exploring the paths and hidden areas of the garden. During the summer sculpture exhibition, children can discover pieces around every corner. It's a great way to introduce children to art. For tree lovers, the National Collections of birch and alder are a must! The massed copses of trees look beautiful in all seasons. The tactile bark of the birch comes in many colours and textures.

Other Information

There is also a tree nursery here. Open by appointment only, the nursery grows and sells many of the beautiful trees found in the garden.

Reviews

Read about this garden in Gardener's World magazine and decided to visit. We were the only visitors, didn't see a soul, put our entrance money in the honesty box and wandered unhindered. In the entrance room there was a selection of umbrellas and a walking stick which I borrowed in case of slopes. Generally, any slopes are gentle, we had a pleasant stroll round, the sculptures are varied and quirky. Lots of wildlife amongst the lovely trees and places to sit and contemplate. The toilet amenaties are in 2 wooden sheds but clean and hygenic. We parked in a wooded copse at the entrance and were able to eat our picnic lunch ar a bench under the trees. A very pleasant and interesting visit, would like to return in the Autumn when the leaves are turning colour.

Lovely! Had a really lovely morning wondering through the very peaceful gardens/ woodland. Loved the art dotted around and thoroughly enjoyed the quiet. A beautifully tranquil place to visit. Thank you!

Lovely Nice sculptures in a lovely, relaxed garden. Doesn't take long to get around the place but nice to send some time in stillness.
