Overview

Michael welcomes you to The Mill House B&B, set in acres of a nature reserve. Stonehenge is only 3.5 miles - why not enjoy a wonderful walk there across the downs? Or just sit in the beautiful garden and enjoy the 180 different varieties of old fashioned roses and extensive birdlife. Walk to the Boot Inn along the river through one of the few unspoiled water meadows left in England, full of meadow flowers including southern marsh orchids. You could even swim in the mill pool, or fly fish for trout. All the bedrooms have lovely views, and after a comfortable night, guests will receive a delicious and hearty breakfast. Apart from Stonehenge, other attractions include Avebury, Old Sarum, Salisbury Cathedral, Wilton House, Longleat and Bath.

What makes a stay at The Mill House unique?

This is a B and B as Bed and Breakfasts were meant to be. A veritable home from home. The house has been in my family for over 100 years, and I have lived here since 1960. There is much history, and many stories to be recounted. Many guests say that the house is a bit like a museum, which they say they love. That is not to say that the house has not kept up with the times. It has. You have to cross the river by foot bridge to reach the front door. The river itself always provides something of interest to watch! The house has grown somewhat since Thomas Miles,a miller, built it for his man in 1785. You will find a warm welcome, but no chocolates on the pillow. I regret to say that I do not take children.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at The Mill House?

There are four double bedrooms with ensuite facilities. The rooms are comfortably furnished and have beautiful views across the meadow, over the garden or towards the mill stream. The Mill House also has a twin bedded room. This room is one of the four, but is large enough to have a double bed and a single bed.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Salisbury area?

The Salisbury area is rich in history, glorious countryside for walking and there are many gardens and pubs to visit close to Berwick St James. Stonehenge is only 4 miles away. It can be reached in 5 minutes by car or by an attractive walk for those who are feeling active. Salisbury, with its splendid cathedral and medieval buildings, Old Sarum and Wilton House, the home of the Earl of Pembroke are all within 15 minutes drive. They are all highly recommended as places to visit. Salisbury has the Playhouse theatre and, in late May every year, the city holds an arts festival. Your hosts will happily give you guidance over places to go during your stay. Longleat, Bath and Avebury are all within easy reach for a day trip.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Breakfasts are served at small tables in the pretty dining room. There is a choice of cereals and a cooked breakfast. All of their produce is local and is of the highest standard.

Located in a delightfully quiet spot yet only four miles from Stonehenge The Mill House is a welcome retreat. Michael, a charming host, could not have been more helpful! He booked a table at The Boot Inn (highly recommended and only a stroll through the meadow). The beautiful gardens of The Mill House with the River Till winding its way past the front door formed the backdrop to a delicious cooked breakfast of local quality ingredients served with toast, honey and homemade marmalade. Thank you Michael!
