Explore the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in one of Edinburgh most remarkable buildings Built in the 1880s, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh is a visual history of Scotland from the 16th century to the present day. This story is told through portraits of the people who shaped it and were connected with it, from royals and rebels and heroes and villains to poets and philosophers, including Mary Queen of Scots, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. Look out for works by great artists such as Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Rodin which are all displayed in the gallery. The National Photography Collection is housed here and includes works by Hill and Adamson, the Scottish pioneers of photography.
