Overview

Greenway was once the holiday home of crime writer, Agatha Christie, and it offers a glimpse into the life of the author and her family. The house is styled to look as it did in the 1950s, when Christie spent holidays here, messing about by the river, playing croquet and reading aloud her works to the many guests. At the bottom of the woodland garden is the magical Dart estuary.

Where is Greenway located?

Greenway is close to the Devon village of Galmpton, close to Brixham, and it is clearly signposted. Parking must be pre-booked. Alternatively, visitors can make the journey by ferry from Dartmouth, or by steam train from Paignton and village stops.

What style of garden is Greenway?

Expansive woods meander down the slope to the Dart estuary. In the walled gardens, a vinery and a restored peach house are a real treat, and there is an allotment garden which is tended by local schoolchildren. The boathouse was the inspiration for the crime scene in ‘Dead Man's Folly', and the entire garden has been designated a ‘Garden of Excellence' by the International Camellia Society. Greenway is owned by the National Trust.

What can guests enjoy at Greenway?

The house is also open to visitors, and it's filled with the personal collections of Agatha Christie and her family, including archeological pieces, silver, china and books. In high season, there is a daily garden walk. There is a cafe and shop on site, and a full calendar of events is offered, including summer theatre performances and pop-up cinema screenings.
