Overview

The ancestral and current home of the Duke of Roxburghe, Floors castle was built between 1721 and 1726 by Scottish architect William Adam. Open to the public for over 40 years, the stories of ten generations of the Roxburghe family are embellished by a treasure trove of furniture, tapestries, carpets and artwork.

Where is Floors Castle & Gardens located?

Floors castle is located on a natural terrace overlooking the beautiful River Tweed and the mound of Old Roxburgh Castle, with views to the south across rolling countryside towards the Cheviot Hills and the border with England. Close by is the historic market town of Kelso, with its historic Abbey, picturesque square, shops restaurants and cafes.

What is the history of Floors Castle & Gardens to the present day?

Built for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe between 1721 and 1726, Floors is one of the most iconic buildings in Scotland, and has a rich history to discover. A family home for ten generations, William Adam's 18th century house was significantly changed and expanded by Scottish architect William Playfair in a decade of works from the mid 1830's. In 1903, the 8th Duke married a wealthy American heiress, and her flamboyant collection of furniture graces the rooms on public display.

What is there to see and do at Floors Castle & Gardens?

Visit the historic Castle, the largest inhabited house in Scotland, take in the beautiful Gardens before a delicious homemade lunch at the Terrace Cafe or Courtyard Cafe. Follow way-marked trails through the woods or down to the river, all set in the stunning landscape of the Scottish Borders.
