Overview

Since June 2003 Coul House is a family-run country home. Set in the hills above Contin, Ross-shire, centrally situated in Scotland's Northern Highlands, it's the ideal place to explore the area's beauty.

What makes a stay at Coul House Hotel unique?

Susannah and Stuart Macpherson are proud to call themselves the owners of this distinguished nineteenth-century house with its unusual octagonal dining room where Queen Victoria attended a Highland gathering in 1881. The hotel is set in eight acres of mature woodlands with splendid views of the Strathconon Mountains from many of the bedrooms. Coul House is an ideal place for walking the banks of the Blackwater River or for biking through the Achilty forest. Rogie Waterfalls, where salmon leap during the summer, is a popular local attraction. The hotel has 21 bedrooms, some gracious public rooms and an excellent reputation for its food. The chef's Sachertorte (Austrian chocolate cake) rivals that served in Vienna.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Coul House Hotel?

The rooms come with a flat-screen TV, chairs, hairdryers, tea and coffee making services, free toiletries and free Wi-Fi.
Coul House Hotel offers en-suite suites, a kitchen, a bar / lounge, a drawing room, as well as a private garden, playground for children, a mini golf course and a patio. There is ample on-site parking, too.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Strathpeffer area?

Strathpeffer is an pleasant, peaceful village located about 17 miles from Inverness. If not driving, Contin, Dingwall and Inverness are easily reachable by bus.

It is popular with golfers and walkers alike. The golf course has amazing vistas. In Strathpeffer there are many enticing walking opportunities, from strolling through the woods to soaking in nature's glory.

Any tourist interested in history at Strathpeffer would want to see Castle Leod - which has been owned for hundreds of years by the same family!

Castle Leod is the Earl of Cromartie's family home-which is also the Mackenzie Clan Chief.

This charming castle is what you can imagine to be a Scottish castle-and during the spring and summer, it is open to the public for a few days per month.

Castle Leod was the site of the same Mackenzie family's dramatic and vivid life 500 years ago.

The history is interwoven with Scottish history. As such it has links with people like Scots Mary Queen and Prince Charles Edward Stuart.

Even worth a visit is the historic pump-house. Now carefully restored, it once offered Victorian elite the spa lifestyle.

Chidlhood Museum is an interesting, easy-to-find, attraction. It stands directly at the village's former Victorian Railway-Station.

There is also a Belgian chocolate shop for gourmets which can be located opposite the Pavilion. Clearly known for its hot chocolate.

This is a warm, idyllic village and an perfect place to visit!

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Coul House has its own restaurant that provides the perfect backdrop for fine dining. It is open daily for lunch and dinner and offers exceptional service with a menu that celebrates local Scottish produce that is bursting with flavour in every dish.

Enjoy contemporary cuisine with traditional favourites whether you are dining with a partner or celebrating a large family occasion.

If you are in the area and have children with you, stop in at the Coul House Hotel for afternoon tea, or a tea time bite - excellent chidlren's menu. This imposing hotel was once a shooting lodge. Situated in the small village of Garve on the Ulapool raod, don't be put off by the long, long tree lined drive. The owners and staff are so very friendly and the hotel and grounds are magnificent! The sweeping lawns and giant sequoia trees are stunning. But .... the woodlands bordering the lawns hide an amazing surprise...a little wonderland of carved elf, fairy and woodland creature "houses" ... on a long, well maintained network of paths, it's magical! Delightful for children of every age. An absolute must see.

Just had a most exquisite dinner, to start with the staff were attentive without being intrusive. The host and proprietor, Stuart is a genial and gregarious hotelier who obviously relishes his calling and he is ably supported by a well trained and led front of house family. The team at Coul run like family and the star is the Chef Greg. Although a close second is a young waitress who alas is departing tonight as my son fell in love with her. The venison is full of flavour, alas I can’t say more

This was our first trip to the Highlands and the Coul House Hotel was the perfect stay. Warm and welcoming hosts...beautiful room overlooking the grounds...very comfortable bed, tea service and good sized tub and bathroom. We especially loved the drinks before dinner in the cozy drawing room, then our choice for dinner and walking through to the dining room for dinner. Lovely service. We also enjoyed the grounds....pretty walks and if it hadn't been so cold we would have tried the golf!

This was my first trip to Scotland and I couldn't have stayed at a better place. The hotel is beautiful and you can't beat the location. All the staff were excellent, very friendly, great service. I planned on going out to try different restaurants in the area, but food was so good that never ate anywhere else. The rooms were a nice size and beds very comfortable. This was my first trip there, but won't be the last.

'Deliciously relaxing' is the byline on the board at the end of the drive , and it sums up the Coul House experience. A tranquil and elegant setting for a peaceful night's rest after a delicious supper . And dogs are truly welcome. Room 1 is on the ground floor giving easy access to the outdoors in the early morning. Breakfast offered an excellent choice of dishes . Altogether perfect for a break of journey.

Exactly what expected of a high quality hotel. The rooms were super, comfortable and en-suites first class. Bar was well stocked and both evening meal and breakfast were beautifully served with menus enjoyed by all four family members. Great place to enjoy at the start of our NC500 trip. Well done Coul House

Everything first class on our 3 day Hogmany stay. As before proprietors & staff very attentive & genuine & food fabulous. I would recommend Coul House's Hogmany to anyone who enjoys being pampered & thoroughly well looked after. We felt very "at home" here.

This hotel is a delight. After six days of total enjoyment, I can not say enough about the facility, the staff, and the management. The food is world-class, and the service is simply the best. Treat yourself to one of the best hotels I've stayed in
