Overview

Uncover one of London's hidden gems One of London's hidden gems, Chiswick House is a prime example of British 18th century architecture. The magnificent Palladian-style Roman villa was influenced by the Grand Tour of Italy of the Earl of Burlington. Look out for the impressive ceilings of the upstairs rooms, William Kent's architecture highlights the house and gardens and the exquisite velvet wallpaper in the halls. Take the time to enjoy a coffee at the café in the award-winning RIBA building overlooking the gardens and the property. The house is best known for its Gardens, considered to be the origin of the English Landscape Movement.

What is the history of Chiswick House & Gardens to the present day?

The building and the grounds were designed by two Georgian fashion designers, the architect and artist William Kent, and his friend and patron Lord Burlington, the third Earl. Influenced by their journeys on the Grand Tour, they rejected the showy, baroque style that was popular in England, in favour of a simpler, symmetrical design based on an old Italian architecture. They promoted the work of the Venetian architect Andrea Palladio and Chiswick House as one of the early English representations of what is known as the "Neo-Palladian" style.
