Overview

Bordering the Beaulieu River in the picturesque New Forest, the 18th Century shipbuilding village of Buckler's Hard offers a fascinating maritime museum, period cottage reconstructions and more.

Where is Buckler's Hard Village located?

Just a short distance from Southampton and Bournemouth, Buckler's Hard is located in the heart of the New Forest, in Hampshire. There is easy access from London.

What is the history of Buckler's Hard Village to the present day?

Back in the 18th century, the then owner of the Beaulieu Estate, John, Second Duke of Montagu, planned to build an impressive port in the West Indies, called Montagu Town. When the French captured the islands, those dreams had to be reformed, and Buckler's Hard is the result. More than 50 ships were built there for the British navy, including several that saw action at the Battle of Trafalgar. In 1963, after a varied history, Buckler's Hard became a tourist attraction, with the Maritime Museum housed in what was once the New Inn.

What is there to see and do at Buckler's Hard Village?

Visitors can explore the village of Buckler's Hard, taking in the Maritime Museum, and visiting the Shipwright's Cottage, to see what life was like for a villager here in the 18th century. During the summer season, visitors can also take a river cruise on the Beaulieu River.
