Buckingham Palace is the residence of the monarchy of the United Kingdom in London and its administrative headquarters. It became a focal point for the British people at a time of national jubilation and mourning.
What is the history of Buckingham Palace to the present day?
Formally known as the Buckingham Residence, the building at the heart of today's palace was a massive townhouse constructed for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site that had been privately owned for at least 150 years. It was purchased by King George III as a private home for Queen Charlotte in 1761 and became known as the Queen's House. It was extended during the 19th century, primarily by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, who designed three wings around the central courtyard. Following the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, Buckingham Palace became the home of the British monarch in London.
