Overview

Barnabas House is an Edwardian Villa set on a quiet lane on the western edge of Dartmoor yet within a few minutes walk of the village. This award-winning B&B is perfectly located for exploring Dartmoor, the Tamar Valley, Devon, and Cornwall. Excellent walking and cycling with Drake's Trail on the doorstep.

What makes a stay at Barnabas House unique?

Angela and Steve are passionate about making their guests' stay at Barnabas House the best it can possibly be. Guests are offered tea and homemade cake on arrival - Angela's banana cake is always a hit! They have won awards for their customer service (the ROSE award - Recognition of Service Excellence), and a Breakfast award for using quality local produce and making their own jams and marmalade.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Barnabas House?

Barnabas House has 6 bedrooms which vary in size - 2 super kings (one of which can be a twin), 3 king-size and 1 family room (king size bed and single bedroom). All bedrooms have showers, and 2 also have baths. They all have something unique to offer - for example, the ground floor bedroom has its own private garden. Each room is named after a local Dartmoor Tor and has great beds, Smart TV, LED demister bathroom mirror, St Kitts luxury toiletries, tea making facilities and a silent-running fridge stocked with fresh milk and water, white cotton linen, bathrobes, and big fluffy towels complete the experience.

Guests have full use of the guest lounge which has an honesty bar, log burner, plenty of books/games to browse/play, and a Nespresso coffee machine with a selection of complimentary pods.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Yelverton area?

Yelverton is a lovely village offering local amenities, yet it is just 5 miles to Tavistock and 10 miles to Plymouth. Road, rail and bus links are superb. The village has a good food pub just a 4-minute walk away, 2 cafes, butcher, a delicatessen selling local produce, bicycle rental, hairdressers/beauty salon, a post office/petrol station, and a mini-market. Princetown - the highest point of Dartmoor - is just 6 miles away which has a lot on offer including the visitor's centre, brewery, and museum. Guests can walk the West Devon Way which comes through Yelverton, or cycle Drake's Trail which is part of Route 27, and there are many National Trust properties close by.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

A fabulous breakfast is served each morning. Meat comes from the village butcher, eggs and bread are delivered by local villages and jams and marmalade are homemade. The local pub serves food, and there are many independent pubs/restaurants within a couple of miles. Tavistock and Plymouth also provide Michelin starred restaurants. A list of local pubs/restaurants will be sent to you with your booking confirmation as it is always best to book a table during busy periods.

Angela and Steve run this sensational guest house that keeps me coming back. This year was another fine example. How many places you stay where you park up and the owner is ready to collect your luggage? I will never forget this , every time I pull up and step outside, Steve is waiting to assist. And then, when you get to the door, Angela greets you with “welcome home Nikos “ OMG. I feel so humble every time I’m here. Love it. Oh and this is a 5 star place + 1 ;) Tips for other travellers The guest house is blessed with being in the perfect location for your walks, restaurants and more. There’s all the amenities and pub across the road. Feel like a treat to the “two bridges”? The taxi with Mark is £28 return. Breakfast at the Barnabas is phenomenal. Very very tasty indeed. Oh and I’ve been coming here for 8 years now

Mike and I enjoyed our recent stay with you. You made us feel welcome and interested in us. We thought you were so kind to give us a card and lovely chocolates to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Things like that mean a lot. We liked our breakfasts - fruit salad was lovely; I miss that now I'm home! Tips for other travellers We visited The Rock Inn a couple of times and liked their Sunday lunch because they will do small portions if you ask; as we get older we find we don't want large meals! The walk at Burrator Reservoir gave lovely vistas, especially in the warm autumn sunshine. We parked in the Quarry car park - it gets more congested further along. Tavistock Parish Church puts on lunchtime organ recitals on Saturdays and coffee mornings on Fridays. Everyone there was very friendly and welcoming.

A great discovery. The room was lovely with views over Dartmoor. Nice touches such as fresh milk and water in a silent fridge. The breakfast was delicious, very well cooked and presented and with lots of local produce. The hosts were very friendly and helpful and even took me to another address in the village on a pouring wet morning when I had no transport. I ate dinner at the Rock Inn across the road from Barnabas House on two evenings. The food was excellent, as was the service, in this family-run pub. A very good location for exploring Dartmoor and easy access to Plymouth. Some lovely local walks straight from the B&B.

Angela & Steve are lovely people and take the time to understand what you are trying to achieve from your stay. Proper bed, proper pillows and a breakfast to die for, full of local produce. Great location and a great break for us. Ian & Lyn Tips for other travellers The Rock Inn a stones throw away from Barnabas House with good food and drink. Take the B3212 out to Princetown and beyond and you won't be disappointed. The Warren House Inn is probably the most remote pub on the moor, but so worth you getting a pint in your hand (or a gin), sit outside and be lost in the view.

Steve and Angela were the perfect hosts, providing excellent B&B accommodation in Yelverton. Steve welcomed us on arrival and helped us in with luggage and offered bike storage in his shed during our stay. The room and en-suite bathroom were spotlessly clean, the bed very comfy and the B&B's location peaceful and quiet in the evening. Our hosts provided a wholesome and tasty breakfast, both Angela and Steve were there to say 'farewell' on our departure! Lovely hosts, excellent B&B in a great Dartmoor location.

Excellent B&B. Extremely clean. Very welcoming on arrival. Fantastic breakfast. Good sized room, was a little dubious about the silent fridge, but it really was silent! Loved the fresh milk so much better than those awful plastic sealed pots, if only other b&b's could do this. Loved that they are trying to be environmentally friendly as possible.

We had a wonderful welcome, and Steve even helped us with our bags. The room was huge, beautiful and so comfortable! The bed was greatlike sleeping in a cloud! And breakfast the next morning was perfect- delicious, locally sourced and generous. We stayed two nights, and wish we could have stayed long! We will be back!

Very warm welcome from Angela and Steve, offering tea and coffee and cake on arrival. The room was spotless and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was delicious! i would recommend Barnabas House. As we have friends who live in the village I am sure we will return very soon.
