Overview

Although Westleigh is small, it has quality written all over it. A bed and breakfast that prides itself on being devoted to dogs and their owners. This 120 year old cottage has been recently renovated. The owner, a cordon bleu cook, will cook evening meals on request. Wonderful clifftop walks on the Jurassic coast and South West Coast Path are just a stone's throw away.

What makes a stay at Westleigh B&B unique?

Westleigh B&B always has its guests in mind, with hard floors downstairs and luxurious bedrooms upstairs. On arrival, guests are treated to homemade Devon scones with clotted cream and homemade jam, while four legged guests get home-cooked liver cake and free dog food. Dinners can be supplied on request in the conservatory, with guests' dogs allowed in for company. Meals are prepared using local fish, meat and other products, and special diets can be catered for too. Breakfast ranges from the ‘The Big Devon ‘ to a simpler continental. Breakfast is also served in the conservatory, using local ingredients, such as local apple juice, orange, fresh brewed coffee, and various teas. Dogs are cared for with beds, brushes, treats, food and dryers. Glorious walks and the beaches are within 2 minutes.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Westleigh B&B?

All rooms have high quality beds, with high thread count sheets and down-filled duvets, unless synthetic duvets are requested. The Belljar room has an en-suite shower room, with complimentary toiletries. The Stripey room has sole use of the bathroom, which has a large bath and shower over. All rooms have a complimentary refreshments tray, with various teas, ground coffee and cafetière, hot chocolate, homemade biscuits or cake, dog treats and water. Rooms also have flat-screen TV, fridge, hanging cupboards and shelves or chest of drawers, and a USB port. There is a third room that is slightly smaller and this can only be used in conjunction with the Stripey room, as they share the bathroom

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Beer area?

Beer, in East Devon, is a fishing village and it still has a shop on the beach where fresh fish, including shellfish and local lobster, can be bought. Fishing boats can be hired on the beach to catch mackerel. Beer used to be a smuggling and lace making village, and the locals love to talk about its history. As it is on the south west coast, there are many walks along the coast or inland, and it is also on the Jurassic coast, so a short drive can take visitors to Lyme Regis, which is famous for fossils. There are many beautiful gardens to visit within an hour's drive, while both Exeter and Dartmouth are within easy reach for day trips.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Westleigh produces such an amazing breakfast that guests don't usually have lunch! Beer is lucky to have several different eating places, ranging from a high end gourmet fish restaurant to a superb fish and chip shop. In between are a really good Italian (in summer months), a cosmopolitan restaurant with a very varied menu, a delicatessen serving takeaway pasties and pies, 3 excellent pubs serving food and several tea huts on the beach, serving very good hot and cold food.

Other Information

Westleigh is a truly unusual bed and breakfast in that it prides itself in being exceptionally clean, with polished antiques and quality fittings everywhere, and yet it welcomes owners and their dogs (there is no charge for dogs or restrictions on numbers). Etta runs Westleigh and is full of local knowledge of places to go and visit. She is a brilliant cook and can cook virtually anything her guests want, so long as it is available!
