Overview

Welcome to the Oldest Inhabited House in Scotland. Visited by 27 Kings and Queens of Scotland, Traquair dates back to 1107, it has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair was initially a royal hunting lodge, welcoming Mary Queen of Scots and later as staunch Catholics they supported the Jacobite cause without counting the cost. Today, they welcome visitors from around the world, where you are open to e xperience the incredible past of this family home. Take a trip to the house, around the grounds, a gorgeous maze, the craft shops, the Garden Cafe and the World-famous Traquair House Brewery, which is situated within the wings of the house. You are welcome to stay at Traquair House on a Bed & Breakfast basis. There are three large rooms with antique furnishings, canopy beds, a private bathroom and central heating.

What makes a stay at Traquair House unique?

Traquair Castle dates back to 1107 and served as a base to a long line of Scottish Kings to establish their authority over the surrounding country.  In 1461, when James Stewart (2nd son of the Earl of Buchan) was given a Earldom, it became home to the Earls of Traquair. To this day, the descendants of the Maxwell Stuart family still live in it, and it is now well known as the oldest inhabited and most romantic house in Scotland.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Traquair House?

The Pink Room is a luxurious suite on the first floor of a house overlooking the maze. Originally Lord Traquair's room, it contains an 18th-century trompe l'oeil over a fireplace. The White and The Blue Rooms are situated on a wing of the House in the late 17th century on the first floor adjacent to the Lower Drawing Room.
