Overview

Hafod y Garreg is the oldest house in Wales, hidden in a hollow above the Wye Valley, with wonderful walking from the house. The views are outstanding in all directions, with absolute peace and quiet. The owners keep hens, so breakfast incorporates delicious free range eggs, and water is spring-fed.

What makes a stay at Hafod Y Garreg unique?

Hafod y Garreg was built for King Henry IV as a hunting lodge, hence its claim as the oldest house in Wales (by a generation!). The house has a stunning cruck frame in one of the bedrooms, and many interesting architectural features, but the bedrooms have everything needed for the 21st century. Dinners are served at a 16th century refectory table in the candlelit dining room and breakfast is taken in the conservatory, with views of the garden and countryside.

What are the rooms and facilities on offer at Hafod Y Garreg?

There are 2 double ensuite rooms, one of which has a small sitting room also. Both rooms have flat-screen TVs, silent fridges and radios. They have beautiful bed linen and are stylishly furnished with early antiques and beautiful fabrics.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Builth Wells area?

There are many things to do besides walking, horse riding and canoeing. Hay-on-Wye, the nearest town, is famous for its many bookshops, and Builth Wells has many events at the showground. The Brecon Beacons are nearby, and the Black Moutains are known for their wonderful walking.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Guests can choose to eat at Hafod y Garreg in the Medieval dining room. There is also a pub in the local village which serves food. There is a restaurant 4 miles away, towards Hay-on-Wye, called Foyles. Four miles towards Brecon, there is the Felinfach Griffin, which is highly recommended.
