Top 10 Places to Stay for the Cheltenham Literary Festival by Dinah Hatch

"Check into this 16th century Tudor Cotswold stone manor house ensconced in gorgeous gardens and it may be hard to drag yourself out to the festival. With stunning views across some of the finest English countryside you’ll encounter, this little gem is family owned and it shows – from the welcome tea and cake to the excellent local advice owners James and Karin dispense. Do not, on any account, miss breakfast at Clapton – the homemade bread and fruit compotes are made on site, the eggs are fresh from the henhouse and the sausages from Gloucester Old Spot pigs, reared next door."

Local directions: Once in the village continue down the road until you reach the village green (this is really a triangular bit of grass with a letter box in one corner) whereupon you bear right, and then keeping this grass to your left, past a house called The Granary and past a house called The Shippon. You will then be outside Clapton Manor that looks down the hill. Do not go down the hill! It is the large house immediately to the left of the Church of St.James (there is a church notice board with its name on it) facing down the hill with a yellowey-green front door. Beyond this there are two gateposts, one with a stone ball on it, and inside this is the parking area. Please park your car there facing the wall (as there is then space for two cars side by side beside the kennel) and don’t worry about access to the garage as it's not used. The front door is through the wrought iron gate into the garden.
