Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway

'I'm writing to sincerely thank you for organising our recent Driver Experience day on Hercules and for somehow arranging for the weather to be kind to us as well! It was a truly memorable day and I am sure that I speak for Richard as well, when I say that it will live with us for the rest of our lives. I can't praise both Phil and Zac highly enough for the way in which they conducted themselves throughout. Welcoming, Professional, clear with their instructions and always happy to answer questions, they were great ambassadors for the railway. It can't be easy dealing with novices like ourselves but they quickly made us feel at ease and showed enormous patience whilst we came to grips with the task in hand. Their input enhanced what was a thoroughly enjoyable day. The whole experience only enforced my admiration for the level of excellence and dedication that is required from the drivers. I would like you to pass on my thanks to all the Staff who looked after us so well throughout the day, including the caterers at Dungeness. Thanks must also go to Mr Ian Botting who gave his time up to talk to us at the beginning of the day and answer questions concerning the Permanent Way team. Finally please pass on our thanks to both Phil and Zac for making it a day to remember.'

I have 8 and 9 year old boys. Having visited a few steam railways previously, the boys were facing this one with a certain amount of trepidation. Upon arrival they were pleasantly surprised and have since commented that it is the best train journey they've ever been on. We sat in the rear carriage which was also the buffet car. We bought drinks and snacks, all of which were reasonably priced. The guy running the buffet car, Mark, was working voluntarily and told us that a lot of the staff are volunteers. You wouldn't know, they are all very passionate about the railway. Mark gave us loads of information about the history of the railway, some of the places en route and also recommendations for local places to eat. The whole experience was very memorable and I would not only recommend this to anyone but I would say it's a ‘must do' if you're visiting this part of the World.

We'd previously been on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway with our grandsons aged 9, 7 and 4 who really enjoy trains especially the 4 year old. He likes watching them rather than travelling on them although he did get a free ride. He overlooks Temple Meads station in Bristol and will spend ages watching the trains coming and going. At the model railway museum they all enjoyed pressing the buttons to make the trains go and the older 2 took part in a quiz and had great fun finding all the answers. We had to "drag" them away at closing time and must admit it was a very reasonably priced outing to keep them amused during half-term.

We boarded this lovely little train at Romney Sands and went up to Dungeness then back and got off at Dymchurch. We got a hot drink (as the weather was freezing cold) at a little cafe in the high street then got back on and got off at New Romney to look at the model trains then back on to Romney Sands. The trains are very sweet and well kept and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Our kids aged 13, 9 and 6 enjoyed their day as did we. Would highly recommend for a fun day out but maybe in nicer weather!!
