Step into Harrogate's famed Turkish bathhouse and be transported back in time. Restored to its former Victorian-era glory, it's one of only seven such buildings in the UK that retains its authentic character, function and charm. The elegant architecture is reason enough to don your cossie; stand in awe of the vaulted and arched ceilings, colourful Moorish walls and mosaic and marble terrazzo floors. Best of all, the spa operates in much the same fashion as it did when it opened over a century ago. Embark on a journey through a sequence of heated rooms, from the tepidarium (warm room) to caldarium (hot room) and finally the laconium (hottest room) - constructed to detox, stimulate circulation and energise your body. Not everything, however, is rooted in the past. Be seduced by a range of modern therapies from Comfort Zone, Jessica, Fake Bake and Germaine de Capuccini.

Review of Harrogate Turkish Baths & Health Spa
Posted on by AmandaType of travel: Couples
It was my first visit to the famous Turkish baths and I wasn't sure what to expect. It is very different to a traditional spa that there are no jacuzzis or swimming pools but that means it offers a very unique experience. A helpful assistant instructs you on the appropriate way to use the facilities, which begins in the steam room. Once you feel you are getting too warm then you brave the icy cold plunge pool - the best way to do this is get in as quickly as possible and swim a couple of fast laps. After a few seconds it doesn't feel as cold as your body is full of heat from the steam room.
After this you enter the first warm room where you can relax on loungers and read a book. After around 20 minutes you will start to feel too warm again so it's back to the plunge pool where you begin to find it a little more comfortable as you are now even warmer than before. This process is repeated with two more hotter rooms and we found it was quite pleasant to swim for a while in the plunge pool after the hottest room.
Each scheduled session is around 2 hours and you will need this much time if you want to repeat the process again, starting with the steam room. I found my skin felt very soft and clean after and I felt very relaxed.
The baths are conveniently located in the city centre, making it perfect for those visiting by train or bus... A perfect activity to do before visiting some of the great restaurants in Harrogate.
