The New Forest’s Woodlands Lodge is the sort of place you’d head for if you wanted to a hotel that felt part of the landscape. Light seems to flood into the airy beamed bedrooms from all angles and when you sit with a glass of something refreshing from the bar in the conservatory, looking out onto the clipped lawns and forest beyond, there’s a sense of being close to nature. All the bedrooms, from standard to junior suite, feel homely (with pretty floral curtains, fireplaces and writing desks) and many lead out into the grounds. Romantics might want to opt for the four poster bedrooms which have a balcony or conservatory with forest views. Families wanting a treat should book the suite in the eves which has plenty of space for the kids to relax in after a hard day’s chasing wild ponies in the woods.

Five of the Best Shop-Till-You-Drop Hotels by Suzi Dixon
"It’s just 15 minutes drive from Southampton’s West Quay shopping complex - and a giant Ikea - but Woodlands Lodge is a real rural retreat, surrounded by the stunning countryside of the New Forest. The hotel works with its setting and offers farmhouse-style décor, floral curtains, fireplaces and so on. There are rooms with four-poster beds for the romantics among you. West Quay boasts 150 shops and flagship John Lewis and Marks & Spencer stores."
