Overview

Blacksheep House is a unique, 5 star self-catering property. Winner of the Grand Designs Home of the Year in 2008, it is an architecturally designed, contemporary renovation of a traditional turf roofed Hebridean Blackhouse. Situated metres from the south coast of South Harris it offers stunning views through huge semi-circular windows across the Sound of Harris to The Uists.

What makes a stay at Blacksheep House unique?

The sense of space is ever present in the Hebrides and this is reflected to great effect in Blacksheep House. The curves of both ceiling and walls capture the every-changing light. The hills, tides, sea and sky are a constant shifting vista through the vast panoramic windows. Sturdy wooden pillars, exposed beams, natural slate (with under floor heating) all compliment the experience. The kitchen has been been completed to a high specification offering all modern conveniences. A welcome pack containing local produce is left for arriving guests. The bathroom offers a completely unique experience featuring a powerful shower and sumptuous Japanese style soaking tub big enough for two.

What is the capacity for Blacksheep House?

The master bedroom is a large, secluded room (with kingsize bed) sleeping 2 people. It provides a simple, luxurious and comfortable stay. In the eaves there is a light, airy and unique space which has a kingsize bed should you wish to spread out. Alternatively, simply relax in a comfy chair. Children under 14 years and pets are not allowed.

What can guests enjoy when staying in the Isle of Harris area?

The Isle of Harris is renown for it's sandy beaches like Luskentyre and Scaristas on the west coast and rugged mountains in the north. In the east there is an area of miniature fjords called the Bays. Harris is an important place for wildlife and the open landscape provides excellent opportunities for viewing many species of bird, animal and plants. Water activities available include sea kayaking, surfing and fishing. No visit to Harris would be complete without a boat trip to St Kilda to view the largest colony of guillemots in the world. Sailing between the islands often provides excellent views of basking sharks, minke whales, orcas, porpoises, dolphins and grey seas.

Where can guests enjoy food and drink?

Blacksheep House is perfectly located to walk into Leverburgh to sample the outstanding food at The Ancorage restaurant and bar. Booking is advisable. The Isle of Harris has numerous places to eat and definitely worth a visit are Temple Cafe at Northton, Skoon Gallery at Geocrab, the Butty Bus at Leverburgh.
