This former 18th-century coaching inn has been recently re-launched as a bistro style restaurant by Marco Pierre White. The panelled walls are embellished with JAKS cartoons and the tables are draped in a combination of soft leather and white linen cloths giving the restaurant a classy yet unpretentious feel. The extensive menu promises British classics which are delivered with a touch of French finesse. So a starter of potted duck is served with prune d’Agen and toasted Poilane bread. Although Wheelers is renowned for its fish dishes, such as grilled Dover sole with a piquant tartar sauce, there are a number of meaty main courses available including braised oxtail and kidney pudding. Classic English puddings such as sherry trifle are resurrected and served with aplomb.
