This out of the way pub has a chequered history having been used as a venue for cock fighting and a police station in its former incarnations. Now it houses a lively brasserie and restaurant serving modern British food. The brasserie retains its period charm with its open log fires and beams but shares some of the contemporary touches found in the restaurant such as the polished wood floors and vibrant coloured walls. Starters could include smoked haddock Scotch egg with char grilled chorizo and roast garlic and parsley mayonnaise. A rag pudding of wild Lakeland venison with fondant potato, Savoy cabbage and bacon, crispy baby carrots and red currant puree could appear among the main course choices with a sticky treacle tart for dessert.
