A sunny yellow exterior is fitting for a restaurant that touts modern British food heavily influenced by Italian flavours. Inside the colour scheme is more muted but the external vibrancy follows through on the menu. Despite the quintessential 16th-century inn setting the food harks back to holidays spent in Tuscany or Umbria. Garlicky mussels and clams could be served as a starter lightly steamed with white wine, parsley, chilli and finished with a touch of lemon. A main could be seared calf’s liver with Marsala, sage, olive oil mash and spinach and to finish a smooth peach poached in Pinot Nero flavoured with star anise. The wine list is also weighted towards Italy but other nations from Europe and the New World get a fair representation.
