Perched on top of the Chinnor valley in the Chiltern hills, Julie Griffiths’ attractive red brick and flint restaurant has a striking personality that changes with the seasons. Open fires and overstuffed sofas provide a warm welcome to winter guests who dine in two pretty, slightly eccentric, dining rooms. In the summer guests are invited on to the wisteria framed terrace and picturesque country gardens, dotted original sculptures by Julie’s partner Michael Cooper. The chefs, trained by Gordon Ramsay and Rowley Leigh, work with the seasons to get the best out of Britain’s native fare. Expect dishes such as Scottish sea kale with blood orange hollandaise, and roast mallard with Lyonnais potato, creamed savoy cabbage, pear and ginger.
