The Royal Oak, Paley Street, Maidenhead, Berkshire

Unlike many celebrity affiliated restaurants, chat show host Michael Parkinson’s gastropub in Maidenhead has proved itself as a serious contender on the UK’s food scene, gaining a slew of accolades and critical acclaim, including a Michelin star in 2010. While Parkinson commented that getting the star was better than “winning a BAFTA” – it’s his chef Dominic Chapman (who opened Heston Blumenthal's Hinds Head pub in nearby Bray) on which the honour truly reflects. His menus consist of British seasonal ingredients cooked with technical flair – hearty, satisfying flavours that fit snugly together. Starters such as sauté of calf’s sweetbreads and bacon with peas, lettuce and mint lead on to main courses like line caught Cornish sea bass with samphire, cockles and mussels, while British puddings and cheeses are available for afters.
