The centuries that have passed since the Rampsbeck first opened its doors overlooking Ullswater have done nothing to dampen its grandeur. While the hotel has retained its 18th-century charm the recently refurbished restaurant has its feet firmly in the 21st century. Although the menu’s roots lie in British and French classics, the Rampsbeck is prepared to push the boundaries in this otherwise conventional hotel. Roast poussin with Devon crab, Thai dumplings and consommé can sit next to roast loin of hare with beetroot puree on the menu as appetisers. Pan fried turbot served with langoustine tortellini and a shellfish dressing or venison with braised red cabbage, spiced blackberries and swede fondant follow. The grand finale could include a hot Bramley apple soufflé with toffee apple ice cream.
