This family-run inn in Ballater has chef Chris O'Halloran (the son of owners Trevor and Evelyn) heading up the kitchen brigade. Having trained at Raymond Blanc’s two-Michelin starred Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons, Chris has a keen sense of innovation, sophistication and precision with his cooking, and his superior technique is merged with bountiful local produce to exciting effect. Starters include light, interesting dishes like salad of west coast crab, jellied crab essence, lovage vichyssoise, while main courses offer robust combinations like seared saddle of roe deer, creamed celeriac, wild mushrooms and sweet peppercorn sauce. With rooms above the restaurant, diners can enjoy a blow-out meal without worrying about how they’ll get home.
