Dating back to 1659 and chock-full of character, this old English pub is a historic setting to enjoy some freshly cooked food, but if it’s a feast for your taste-buds, rather than a simple pub lunch that you’re after, then you won’t be disappointed. The menu has a refreshingly modern style that takes in both local suppliers and global influences, with bold flavour combinations like three-cheese fritters with pineapple and apricot chutney sitting comfortably beside more traditional dishes like venison hotpot with braised red cabbage. Bottisham smoked duck from the local Denham estate comes with a cucumber and spring onion salad, dressed in honey, soy and sesame dressing; while on the set weekday menu (a steal at £12.95 for two courses) fillet of sea bass comes on a chilli, coriander and horseradish linguine with steamed pak choi. Finish off with double chocolate brownie with chocolate ice cream.
