Located down a flight of stone steps beneath the hustle and bustle of the High Street, a former prison provides the setting for this intimate bistro. Despite its previous incarnation, exposed brick walls, old beams and a barrel vaulted ceiling make for a cosy space. The kitchen uses locally sourced seasonal produce in its amalgamation of French and British cuisine. Lunchtime menus on the blackboard offer classic fish and chips, sausage and mash or liver and bacon while the dinner menu may suggest a local rack of lamb, cooked pink, in a mustard and herb crust, Provencal vegetables and a rich tomato sauce or guinea fowl with a mushroom and tarragon duxelle. An eclectic wine list offers a good choice from around the globe.
