Self-proclaimed ‘Belligerent Belgian’ chef-patron Frederic Desmette’s La Chouette restaurant stands in a charming 16th century building on Dinton green. There, the eccentric and photography-loving chef dishes up his brand of rich and generous, classic Belgian cuisine, which has been described by the Telegraph as “immaculate”. Think grilled fillet of turbot with a mousseline sauce; Scottish salmon fillet in a bierre blanche sauce and veal kidney with a sweet mustard sauce. Surroundings are cosy and characterful, with low wooden beams, wooden floorboards and chintzy curtains. With a passionate chef/owner, strong wine list and competent service, this place is something of a hidden gem.
