Kai, 65 South Audley Street, London, London

It’s not just the decor that sets this restaurant apart from other Chinese restaurants with its plush gold hued seating and gentle lighting. The a la carte menu covers some 17 pages and demonstrates the diversity of Chinese cuisine. Curiously it begins with the dessert section with aim of encouraging the diner to save enough room to enjoy an often overlooked aspect of Chinese cooking. This could be a Mandarin chocolate fondant with kumquat ice cream. There are traditional dishes such as crispy duck available but also more unusual dishes such as pan fried foie gras served with caramelised cashews, white pepper, grapes and passion fruit dressing. If the thought of so much choice is daunting there are set menus available for larger groups.
