Close to Harlech Castle and housed in two cottages dating back more than 400 years, this restaurant with rooms does a good job of balancing tradition with up-to-date dining. The cosy dining room has exposed beams and local art on the walls, but there are also contemporary leather chairs and designer Italian cutlery. The three-course menu suits the décor with traditional Welsh ingredients given a modern European makeover. Grilled goat’s cheese, for example, comes with a red onion marmalade croute and carpaccio of beetroot and celeriac, while the rack of local lamb has a herb crust and red wine jus. The wine list has a good showing from South Africa and there’s a serious selection of Armagnac and brandies.
