This smart Italian is part of renowned chef Terry Laybourne's reliably excellent 21 Hospitaility group that also includes Cafe 21. A former warehouse has been transformed into a chic yet casual space with exposed brick walls and polished wood floor that's flooded with light through picture windows. You can just drop in for a cappucino, but when there's parmesan and mascarpone polenta with Tuscan-braised venison and wild mushrooms, who could resist staying for the full Monty? Start with a generous sharing 'plank' of antipasti misto that includes fennel salami and San Danielle ham followed by tagliatelle with salt cod and black mussels. The mostly Italian wine list offers exceptional value and you can even bring your own bottle free of charge on the monthly BYOB night.
Caffe Vivo is part of the following Editors' Picks:
"With grilled leg of lamb steak, fillets of plaice or chicken liver pappardelle featuring on the early bird specials, it’s difficult to think of a reason to stay away. Part of the prestigious 21 Hospitality group, Caffe Vivo is one of Newcastle’s top Italian restaurants. And the best part? A very generous early bird window ranging from 12 – 10pm every day except Saturday."
