Bouchon Bistrot, 4/6 Gilesgate, Hexham, Northumberland

A substantial building made from local stone just off the ancient market square is home to this award winning bistro. The quality is in the detail as illustrated by dark wood tables, red velvet chairs and the restaurant name painted in gold on the window. Frenchness as well as freshness is the key to the classic bistro cuisine. Starters include an archetypal braised beef en Miroton, onion confit and marjoram, as well as escargots de Bourgogne and gratinated onion soup. Main courses are a litany of classics such as coq au vin, confit de canard, Brittany fish market stew and jarret d’agneau with sautéed potatoes. Desserts of tarte tatin and bourdaloue complete the set, not forgetting a well composed French wine list.
