This former refectory dating from 1239AD used by Dominican friars is reputed to be the oldest dining room in the UK. The restaurant is full of gothic charm with heavy carved wooden chairs, ancient beams and stone walls. There’s also a newly restored banquet hall featuring bespoke oak furniture, chandeliers, wall coverings and stained-glass windows. However, the food is far more contemporary than the historic surroundings, focusing mainly on modern British cuisine with international hints. A starter could be Cumbrian rabbit tortellini with haricot and leek cream. There is an extensive choice of main courses each with a recommended wine or beer to accompany it. So a grilled Scottish salmon fillet served with butter bean, pancetta and mussel broth could be accompanied by a New World chardonnay. Dessert is a traditional affair and could include rice pudding with honeycomb and English Cox’s apples.
