Bistro 21
Aykley Heads House, Aykley Heads, Durham, DH1 5TS

A rustic Gallic farmhouse charm is apparent in this bistro style restaurant on the outskirts of Durham. Pine floors and furnishings and white washed walls complete the look but the food and drink on offer is far more urbane. After sampling a Bellini from the cocktail menu you could kick off your meal with crab and whisky soup with butter-poached langoustine. Braised Moroccan lamb shoulder with chermoula, fruit and nut couscous and fennel and blood orange salad could follow after. It’s a return to home comforts for desserts with traditional teatime treats such as steamed apple and cinnamon sponge with rum-soaked raisins and custard on offer. There is also a separate vegetarian menu and many wines are available by the glass and carafe.

Ten Top Restaurants with Early Bird Specials by Anna Silverman
"Rustically chic interiors breathe a fresh breath of simplicity in this bistro-style restaurant. Serving many of the all-time classics, such as minute steak and chips, it’s hard to go wrong with this menu. Between 17.30 and 19.00 you can choose from the two course menu at £15.50 or push the boat out with three courses at £18. With the likes of aromatic king prawns and mussel broth, it would be hard to resist."
