These days, you've got to have a philosophy, even if you're a pub. But if yours is a credo of “sustainability, simplicity and taste” that taps into the 800 year culinary history of the Lowther estate that's on your doorstep (as is the case with the George and Dragon) then you can't really argue. The clincher is a seasonal menu that includes impeccably simple delights such as organic chicken liver paté served with chutney and toast or navarin of lamb with spring vegetables. Daily changing specials might include more complex dishes such as fillet steak with braised oxtail, ham and mash and the well priced wine list offers plenty of interest including selections from Brazil and England. Chunky tables and leather banquette seating mixes traditional pub and modern bistro to pleasing effect.
