Hole in the Wall
With its open fires, painted tounge and groove clad walls and ladder back chairs, this might look like a cosy bistro. In fact, legendary chef George Perry Smith trained a whole generation of great British chefs here in the 1950’s. More than half a century on, the restaurant is still going strong serving a corn fed chicken and rabbit terrine that wouldn’t have looked out of place on one of Perry-Smith’s famous cold buffets. Starters range from a bowl of comforting home-made cream of cauliflower and cheddar soup to a sophisticated seared cornish scallops on wilted spinach with a chilli jam. Main courses such as pan-fried monkfish tail on a wild rice and pinenut pilauf with a red pepper and fresh ginger dressing are served in hearty portions.
