The Square

The Square is a very grown up restaurant. The pin striped lunch time crowd talk serious business over plates of lasagne of Devon crab with a cappuccino of shellfish and champagne foam. But the outstanding modern haute cuisine, biblical wine list and well drilled service under the watchful eye of maitre’d Jacques Carlino attracts dedicated foodies, off duty chefs and wine buffs as well. Pot-au-feu of pigeon from Bresse with a truffled liver ravioli, smoked pigeon consommé and fricassée of Peas and Madeira is typical of chef Phil Howard’s thoughtful, complex approach, but the simple delights of a signature pre-dessert of homemade yogurt served with beignets (mini-doughnuts to you and me) are almost worth the price of admission alone.
