The Square is a very grown up restaurant. The pin striped lunch time crowd talk serious business over plates of lasagne of Devon crab with a cappuccino of shellfish and champagne foam. But the outstanding modern haute cuisine, biblical wine list and well drilled service under the watchful eye of maitre’d Jacques Carlino attracts dedicated foodies, off duty chefs and wine buffs as well. Pot-au-feu of pigeon from Bresse with a truffled liver ravioli, smoked pigeon consommé and fricassée of Peas and Madeira is typical of chef Phil Howard’s thoughtful, complex approach, but the simple delights of a signature pre-dessert of homemade yogurt served with beignets (mini-doughnuts to you and me) are almost worth the price of admission alone.
The Square is part of the following Editors' Picks:
"Within more than 2,000 separate wines on offer, The Square has a fine list to complement Philip Howard’s classical two Michelin starred cuisine. It is unusual for one of London’s top restaurants in that its mark-up levels are quite modest, and indeed there are some real bargains tucked away in the upper echelons of the list, with the odd wine actually below its current retail price. There is a good selection of Spanish wines, such as the excellent value Rioja Ata, as well as plenty of coverage of both New and Old World."
"The Square has attracted gourmets and off duty chefs for over 20 years. Philip Howard’s mature, confident cuisine continues to evolve with sauté of Scottish langoustine tails with barbecued pork ribs, grapefruit, lardo di Colonnata, honey and soy joining timeless signature dishes like lasagne of crab with a cappuccino of shellfish."
