Everyone from Hollywood stars to celebrity chefs have dined in the gothic splendour of the Witchery. You don’t have to be famous to appreciate the fine cooking on offer in this atmospheric 16th century building in the shadow of Edinburgh castle. The signature steak tartare is a carnivore’s dream. Made from chopped, seasoned Aberdeen Angus beef, it comes with the unusual garnish of a fried quail’s egg and celeriac remoulade. Scottish seafood plays a starring role in the form of a platter that includes lobster, oysters, langoustines, clams, mussels, crab and smoked salmon. The impressive wine list runs to a thousand bins and there’s luxury accommodation available for those that wish to indulge.
