The Vanilla Pod
This gem of a neighbourhood restaurant has an intimate, colourful interior with white napery and comfortably seating. Chef-patron Michael Macdonald serves local, daily-sourced produce cooked in modern British style. Starters include a highly original jellied rabbit with pickled vegetable, a creative take on tart tatin that replaces apple with endive and pairs it with foie gras and citrus sauce or a rich and earthy cep and chestnut velouté. Poached monkfish with capers, celeriac and saffron; loin of venison with creamed celeriac or Appleton pork loin marinated in five spices with linguini of vegetables follow. Desserts might include Tahitian vanilla pannacotta with doughnuts or a properly made tiramisu. A five course gourmand menu is also available.
