The Punch Bowl Inn

From its stone exterior, the Punch Bowl looks like a typical Lake District inn. Inside things are rather different. High-backed chocolate brown leather chairs, sparkling white linen and polished oak flooring give the dining room a decidedly modern feel. The menu adheres to the local/seasonal mantra, albeit it with a European twist. Begin with Cumbrian air dried ham with parmesan and rocket salad or baked Cumbrian Cheddar cheese and spring onion soufflé. Main courses might include duck breast with creamed cabbage, pomme fondant and thyme juices or a daring combination of pan seared halibut with braised ox tail. For a more casual experience, the restaurant menu is also available in the comfortable and stylish slate-floored bar.
