Located in this north Yorkshire town’s fine Georgian square, Liz and Chris Astley’s small (it seats 30) semi-formal restaurant is the one locals and those further afield flock to. Chris Astley, a past chef at the Savoy and at Mallory Court, sources fish from Paignton and local meat and vegetables. His modern British menu offers the likes of smoked haddock and chive soup or rocket and cheese risotto for starters while robustly flavoured mains may include belly of pork with black pudding, apple and cider or beef with flat mushrooms and a Béarnaise sauce. A warm chocolate mousse, vanilla crème brûlée or strawberry Champagne jelly may follow. A concise list of globally sourced wines is reasonably priced.
