The Angel

The late Denis Watkins helped create what we now know as the gastropub as chef and proprietor of this 18th century North Yorkshire inn. An atmospheric panelled bar gives way to the elegant dining room with its exposed beams and well spaced linen covered tables. Chef Bruce Elsworth’s modern British menus feature plenty of local produce in the form of homemade black pudding with spiced apple compote and seared foie gras; confit goosnargh chicken and leek terrine with mango salsa and roasted loin and braised shoulder of Bolton Abbey mutton with Savoy cabbage, potato dauphinoise and rosemary jus. The bargain early bird menu might include the signature “Little Moneybags” of seafood in filo served with a lobster sauce.
