You can still just pop in for a drink at this rural Heredfordshire pub. But since 2001 when it became world famous as the first gastropub to win a coveted Michelin star, you’ll find as many foodies on a pilgrimage as locals supping pints. Owner and chef Steve Reynolds honed his craft with a stint at London’s renowned Le Gavroche restaurant. That training shows through in a typical fine dining-style dish of pan-fried foie gras with Pembridge apple jelly or sea bass fillet with mushroom duxelle and herb oil with Dauphinoise potato. But things get as simple as soup of the day or home-smoked haddock fish cake. Ingredients don’t get more local than fruit, vegetables and herbs from the inn’s own gardens.
